Our two major objectives in importing Hampshires from Sweden were to find a truly big framed, ultra boar as well as a boar very extreme in his muscling yet still above average in frame size.
-
Soren was our choice for the first objective and Schnapps surely fits our second scenario.
-
His loin and ham muscles really “pop out” at you.
-
He has a tremendous dimple above his tail and a big groove down his back.
-
The three progeny test groups by Schnapps’ sire averaged 0.66 in carcass backfat and 64.5% lean (+1.5%). His dam’s progeny test group excelled in performance (+1.20 lb gain per day and –0.28 lb feed per lb gain compared to the station average) and lean composition (0.62 in carcass backfat and 62.5% lean).
-
Both his sire’s and dam’s test groups had excellent color and meat quality scores. The Swedish Reas line is represented on both sides of Schnapps’ pedigree.
-
Many of the very muscular and lean Hampshires in the U.S. today carry Reas breeding either through prior U.S. imports (Bakom, Anders and Marius) or from the Canadian Jolly, Jet and Trapp lines. Schnapps’ dam was a big framed, lean sow with excellent udder quality. She averaged 11.0 born live and 8.0 weaned in her 2nd and 3rd litters after a first litter of only five born.
-
Although you can often find extreme muscling today, it is difficult to find it in a very big package. If you want to add muscle but maintain a bigger package that can perform and stay lean to heavier weights, we recommend a shot of the famous “Swedish Schnapps.”
