As his name implies, he is an extremely heavy-boned boar who is bred to excel in leanness and muscle.

His littermate barrow at the Minnesota Test Station gained 2.26 and had the following carcass cutout: 1.07 BF, 6.02 LEA, 31.6 length. A littermate boar had an on-the-farm performance of 2.41 ADG, 0.68 BF and 6.75 LEA. The average performance on 134 sons of Pipe’s sire,

Wilson, was: 160 days to 230, 0.70 BF and 6.30 LEA. The 180 tested sons of his maternal grandsire, Norman, had the following average performance: 160 days to 230, 0.70 BF, 6.21 LEA. Norman also sired the top indexing pen at the Minnesota Test Station with two pigs cutting over 7.7 in loin eyes and 65.3 and 73.2 per cent lean. Rarely do you find extreme leanness and muscle combined with outstanding sow productivity.

His dam has a BVSPI of 105.50 ranking 8th in the Compart herd and her littermate has a BVSPI of 102.23.

Pipe’s development since the NBS has been very pleasing. He has continued to get heavier-structured, maintained his very expressive muscling and remained very sound while housed on bare concrete in a 6’ x 14’ pen. The Wilson-Norman cross has resulted in top selling boars and gilts at several of the recent Hampshire conferences but more importantly has made Compart’s Hampshires in great demand by commercial producers.

Although Pipe was not the top selling Hampshire at the NBS, we feel along with many who have stopped at SGI to see Pipe that he can stand up to any Hampshire boar sold in 1985 in terms of combining superior type, performance and carcass merit into one functional package.
