Apache was the top selling boar out of the top indexing pen in the August 1987 Western Illinois Test Station sale.
-
We thought this boar was a sure bet for Hog College Boar and never expected him to sell until NBS time. A frequent comment when anyone sees this boar for the first time is “Boy, he sure should sire barrows”. Maybe that is because of his massive bone work, the lean, meaty turn to his top, or the wide, deep, muscular shape of his ham as he walks away from you.
-
When viewed from the side, Apache also has good length of body with a long, level rump structure.
-
Apache was in the first group of boars to go through the new slotted Western Illinois Test Station and came off test as a very sound boar with good cushion to his legs and pastern both front and rear. Slaughter data on 12 head of Apache’s half sibs averaged 227 lb live weight, 0.75 BF, with a 6.33 LEA.
-
His grandsire, Comanche, was one of SGI’s most popular barrow sires, but do not forget all of those Comanche daughters and sons still out there producing good Hampshire breeding stock.
-
Apache has a good underline and a mother that raised every pig she farrowed in her first two litters.
-
Apache’s outstanding growth rate, large muscle volume, and extreme heaviness of structure should make him an excellent choice to produce derby or live show barrows, as well as high performing, meaty, rugged Hampshire boars and gilts.
