• The Swedish impact on the U.S. swine industry all started with the now legendary Ulf imported by SGI in 1989.  Although Ulf has been more spectacular, Harl imported along with Ulf in 1989 is still going strong and is a favorite of commercial producers when it comes to producing sound, functional and highly productive females. 
• In SGI’s second importation came Lars who has set the standard for combining tremendous growth with ultra lean composition.  His stable mate, Viking, has been a consistent sire of top performing females and another favorite of the commercial producers. 
• In SGI’s 3^rd importation, Jens has set the standard for backfat (1^st on the January 1994 Crossherd Sire Summary) while Ludwig has been spectacular in his ability to sire big, lean, muscular Yorkshires.  Again, there is a steady performer in the group, Alfred, that is rapidly making friends with commercial producers because of his ability to sire superior females. 
• SGI now introduces one fourth round of Swedish imports.  Nils and MALMO.  We expect Nils to make a significant impact in terms of producing big, lean, maternally oriented Yorkshires while MALMO may well by the next commercial man’s dream.  MALMO was selected from the breeding barn at Mossle Farm where he was serving as their Junior Herd Sire.  We had to bargain hard to get him included in the shipment. 
• MALMO is an extremely lean, yet a wide spring, super sound, durable boar with an excellent underline.  MALMO was bred by Maryhill Farm that ranks 1^st in Sweden for backfat EBVS.  MALMO’s two littermates in the central test station gained 0.21 lb faster than the station mean with 0.20 lb less feed per lb gain.  They had only 0.66 inch carcass backfat and 62.2% lean.  MALMO’s sire was a big, long bodied, very impressive individual.  His seven progeny groups tested in the central test station had on 0.55 in carcass backfat with 63.4% lean. 
• MALMO’s dam only farrowed 7 pigs in her first litter.  However sow productivity has been very good on both sides of his pedigree.  His paternal granddam averaged 13.3 born and 10 weaned in her first 4 parities.  The maternal granddam of MALMO averaged 12.0 born live and 8.5 weaned in 6 parities. 
• We are confident that Malmo can remove fat while still maintaining the natural width of body and sound, durable design needed for females to excel in confinement.
