- The Swedish impact on the U.S. swine industry all started with the now legendary Ulf imported by SGI in 1989. Although ULF has been more spectacular, Harl imported along with Ulf in 1989 is still going strong and is a favorite of commercial producers when it comes to producing sound, functional and highly productive females.
- In SGI’s second importation came Lars who has set the standard for combining tremendous growth with ultra lean composition. His stable mate, Viking, has been a consistent sire of top performing females and another favorite of the commercial producers.
- In SGI’s 3rd importation, Jens has set the standard for backfat(1st on the January 1994 Crossherd Sire Summary) while Ludwig has been spectacular in his ability to sire big, lean, muscular Yorkshires. Again, there is a steady performer in the group, Alred, that is rapidly making friends with commercial producers because of his ability to sire superior females.
- SGI now introduces one fourth round of Swedish imports, NILS and Malmo. We expect NILS to make a significant impact in terms of producing big, lean, maternally oriented Yorkshires while Malmo may well be the next commercial man’s dream.
- NILS is from the same farm as ULF’s sire, Harl, Ume, Lars, Alfred and Ludwig. He is a big framed, extra long bodied boar that was slated to be the next junior herdsire at Magleberg’s. His dam, her two littermates and his maternal granddam are all big framed, lean, powerful sows with excellent performance and maternal productivity. His dam has average 9.5 born live and 11.0 weaned after transfer for her first two litters while his maternal granddam has averaged 12.2 born live, 10.5 weaned and 23.7 pigs per year for six parities.
- NILS’ maternal grandsire is also the sire of Lars. He set the all-time Swedish Index Record based on the outstanding performance and cutabilty fo his offspring. This, coupled with the excellent color and marbling scores of his offspring’s carcasses, has made him the most popular Yorkshire AI sire in Sweden. The five progeny groups tested in the central test station by NILS’ sire had a +0.12 lb gain per day, -0.16 lb feed per lf gain and a +1.6% carcass lean deviation from the station mean.
- With his extra frame size and length of body, combined with a more massive skeleton than most Swedish Large Whites, we feel NILS can be the next step in producing bigger, leaner, more productive Yorkshires.
