St. Bernard was the $23,500 Champion EPD Boar at the 1995 National Barrow Show.  He combines a well documented performance pedigree that is second to none with phenomenal individual performance and a blockbuster phenotype that overwhelmed one of the strongest Duroc boar shows ever at Austin.  St. Bernard's sire, Great Dane, is currently the top ranking Duroc boar for both backfat EPDs(-0.12) and Terminal Sire Index (136.1).  He also has a very good -2.1 EPD for days.  Great Dane sired the Reserve Champion boar at the 1995 Summer Conference and $7000 Reserve Champion Boar at the Iowa State Fair.  The maternal Grandsire of St. Bernard is the living legend, Nathan 1931, who ranks 5th in backfat EPDs and has five sons in the top 30 for Backfat EPDs in the June 1995 Across-Herd Sire Summary.  Nathan's offspring are also noted for their large, deep loin eyes and superior maternal traits.  On the bottom side, St. Bernard's dam is sired by Asset 66-1.  Asset's sons ranked 1st, 3rd, 7th and 12th in Terminal Sire Index in the June Duroc Across-Herd Sire Summary.  St. Bernard is from a litter of 11 born live, 9 weaned and 127 lb 21 day litter weight.  His dam was the 3rd top indexing gilt in her contemporary group.  He is a big framed, long bodied, wide sprung and very rugged boar.  Because of his extra extension and heaviness of skeleton, St. Bernard carries his tremendous muscle thickness and volume with ease.  Sound, sure footed, well balanced and eye appealing; St. Bernard has that appearance of a true generator.  The Danish influence has certanly been evident in terms of leanness and muscle.  However, St. Bernard has the added dimension of superior growth and a rugged, tough made design.  Almost twenty years ago a Duroc boar named St. Bernard made a very significant impact in both the U.S. and Japan.  We are confident the current St. Bernard will also have a major impact on the Duroc breed world wide.
