• Even though we had just purchased Napalm, another son of Nathan, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to add NATE to our boar battery.  In observing carcasses or Real Time scans of the pigs sired by the Danish Duroc imports, one is impressed by their consistently round, deep shaped loins. 
• Although EPDS are not calculated for LEA, there is no doubt Nathan would be right at the top based on the numerous large loin eyes reported on Nathan’s offspring.  Certainly, if we are going to improve loin eye area in Durocs, we need to get away from the flat or concave shaped loins often encountered in the past.  The Danish Durocs have also excelled in backfat EPDS.  In the January 1994 Cross Herd Sire Summary Fjord was 1st, Jubili was 8th, Nathan was 9th and Body Builder was 17th.  NATE not only excels in thickness of loin, rump and ham; but, similar to NAPALM, he is an wide sprung, big ribbed boar. 
• An added bonus with NATE is he has the extra heaviness of structure typical of the Movin On line on the bottom side of his pedigree.  Movin On is the 10th rank boar for
• NATE’s dam is a big, powerful, heavy bone sow that excelled natural body width and growth. 
• NATE is from a litter of 12 born live, 9 weaned and 111 lb 21-day litter weight.  NATE’s maternal granddam had a 100.59 SPI after 7 parities and her littermate had a 102.97 SPI after 8 parities.  Both of these Sequoia daughters as well as their dam, the 8-8 sow that farrowed and raised 8 litters at Rouse & Hodson, were consistent producers of top performing, rugged and superior phenotype offspring. 
• SGI’s objective in importing the Danish Durocs was to combine their superiority for leanness and muscle with the long recognized superiority of the U.S. Duroc for growth, feed conversion and ruggedness. 
• NATE is an excellent example of the progress that can be made in terms of meeting this objective.
