• Although the Swedish imports have consistently excelled in leanness and sow productivity, none have produced the tremendous loin eye areas consistently reported on sons and daughters of the Danish import, Mortvedt.  When it became apparent that Mortvedt’s semen quality was not going to return to normal, we began looking for a son.  Our search turned up a near clone phenotypically to Mortvedt at the Bill Tempel Farm. 
• MORT has the same extra natural width of body, wide chest floor, big square thick rump and total muscle thickness of Mortvedt.  He is also a big footed, heavy boned and super sound boar with a high quality underline.  He and his littermates certainly excelled in loin muscling with all nine pigs scanning from 6.80 to 7.72 by Real Time.  Tempel’s retained five gilts from the litter.  They ranked 1^st  though 5^th on index in their contemporary group.  The four boars also ranked 1^st through 4th and averaged 157 days, 0.50 BF, and 7.43 LEA.  Two of these littermates plus MORT were retained at Tempel’s. 
• MORT is also backed by tremendous sow productivity.  Mortvedt’s dam farrowed and weaned 11-11 and 12-12 in her second and third parities.  MORT’s dam is by the immortal Ulf, whose daughters have set the standard for sow productivity.  She has weaned 26.75 pigs per year with a 139.5 day farrowing interval, 11.33 born live (EPD 0.34), 41 lb litter birth weight (EPD 1.31), 10.33 weaned 155.8 lb 21-day litter (EPD 7.94), 138.19 maternal line index and 118.82 SPI.  Three of the five littermates to MORT retained at Tempel’s weaned a litter by the time they reached one year of age.  They averaged 10 weaned with 146 lb actual 21-day litter weight.
