• PER was the second top indexing boar behind his littermate and a member of the all time high indexing pen at the Iowa Swine Test Station. 
• Probably the most amazing characteristic is PER‛s extreme leanness while gaining 2.84 lb per day.  He scanned only 0.72 in backfat versus the contemporary average of 0.89 with an EPD of -0.069.  His top indexing (251.5) littermate gained 3.06 lb per day and the third boar in the pen gained 2.56 with only 0.69 backfat.  The 222 pen feed efficiency was excellent in comparison to the station average of 249. 
• PER‛s sire SGI 270 Ulf, was imported from Sweden.  Because of the very consistent superiority of Ulf‛s offspring in growth, leanness, muscle and underline quality, he has become the most popular Yorkshire or Large White presently at SGI.  Ulf is presently the No. 1 ranked sire for backfat and Terminal Sire Index in the Yorkshire Crossbred Sire Summary. 
• PER‛s dam is by Stetson, also a very popular SGI sire, whose offspring excelled in leanness and muscle as well as heaviness of structure.  The maternal great grandsire was a Profit, another extremely popular and excellent generating SGI sire. 
• PER is a big framed, long bodied, extremely lean boar.  He is remarkably well muscled yet is level in his top and flexible in his overall design.  He stands on good bone, has a very exceptional underline and is extremely aggressive. 
• PER‛s littermate gilts are powerful, extra lean and muscular yet very feminine with excellent underlines. 
• One of the hardest things to accomplish in breeding swine has been to combine rapid growth with extreme leanness and muscle while maintaining structural soundness and maternal productivity. 
• Although only time will tell, PER appears to be a big step toward accomplishing this most difficult feat.
