 Matti is an outstanding Landrace boar that combines superior performance and excellent sow productivity with an extra wide-made, tough and durable yet maternal appearing phenotype.  A big, bold-fronted boar with excellent width of chest and spring of rib, Matti carries this extra width of skeleton back into a big hip and rump.  For a boar of his body depth and width, Matti has good length of front and stretch to his body.  He is a heavy structured, very good-footed boar that is heads-up and aggressive.  By the same sire as Matava and Mandell and from the same farm as Mandell; Matti is bred to excel.  We already discussed the outstanding generating ability of his sire, Maine, in the discussion of Matava and Mandell.  The Jyrakoski herd consistently had the best combination of frame size, heaviness of structure and correctness of body design as well as feet and leg structure of any herd we visited in Finland.  Outstanding sow productivity runs deep in Matti’s Pedigree.  His dam has a 113 SPI and has averaged 12.0 weaned with 167 lb. weaning weight while her sire has a 119 SPI based on the performance of 562 daughters.  Although we were disappointed that Myrakoski did not pass final inspection due to loss of appetite and resulting “run down” condition, Matti is certainly a worthy replacement.  Whereas not quite as expressive in appearance as Myrakoski, he certainly does not lack muscle being particularly thick and massive in his rump structure and very thick and muscular through the center part of his ham.  A big, tough-made boar that is very complete and maternally oriented, we are excited about the contribution Matti can make in the production of high producing female lines with the extra longevity many are seeking.
