In recent months there has been renewed interest in semen from Yorkshires that are of the fast growing, wide made, rugged-heavy duty type that can add extra toughness and durability, yet still have outstanding maternal traits. Our search for a boar of this type ended when we spotted Diamond Reo in a pen of 25 boars on total slats at Mark Compart’s farm. It was obvious that Diamond Reo and his littermate 201-8 were the fastest growing boars in the pen without consulting the scan report. On analysis of the scan report they were first and second on days to 230 (133 and 137) and first and second on Maternal Line Index. Littermate gilts 201-2 and 201-3 were also first and second on Maternal Line Index in their contemporary group. Diamond Reo is an extra wide sprung, big ribbed, heavy structured boar that is very sound on his feet and legs. He has very ideal muscle thickness and volume considering both the packer’s demand for total lean and also the need for sound functional highly productive individuals with extra longevity in female lines. Diamond Reo’s sire, SGI 2245 Diamond 135-5, and parental great grandsire, SGI 287 Lars, both excel in growth with EPDs of 5.80 and -5.88 days. The Diamond, Gustason and Lars lines in his pedigree have all ranked at the top of the Yorkshire Across-Herd Sire Summary for Maternal Line Index. Thus, we are confident of Diamond Reo’s ability to generate fast growing, very maternally orientated offspring. Like in the namestake, the Diamond Reo truck, he is also a big, rugged, durable machine that can add performance and longevity to your maternal line.
