We selected CHALLENGE as the name for the $17,500 1988 Yorkshire Winter Conference Champion because it is truly a challenge to breed a pig that puts everything together to the degree that he does. A top indexing boar from the Lisbon Test Station, he outgrew his contemporaries by 25.5% yet had 18.8% less backfat. He is an extremely long bodied boar yet is very massive about his head, has tremendous bone, extremely big feet, and a ton of muscle. A few years ago, most people would have said it was impossible to produce a boar that could gain 2.90 lb per day with only 0.65 BF and also have a tremendous amount of muscle packed on an extra, extra heavy-duty and correctly designed skeleton. CHALLENGE is not an accident. Grimm’s have placed four pens out of his sire, Charlie, on test in central test stations. They have ranked 1, 1, 2, and 3 over all breeds in their contemporary groups. These boars averaged 2.45 ADG, 0.78 BF, 5.75 LEA. Charlie has consistently sired heavy boned, heavy muscled, sound, functional pigs. CHALLENGE is from a litter of 9 farrowed, 9 weaned, and 145 lb 21-day litter weight. From the day CHALLENGE was purchased, the demand for his semen has been as great or greater than that of any other boar we have had at SGI. Watching his grow and develop, we are confident the many Yorkshire breeders and commercial producers who have purchased his semen are not going to be disappointed. CHALLENGE has truly met all expectations. He is the number one ranked Yorkshire sire based on combined EPD for days (-2.90) and backfat (-0.04). He has sired the $8,500 Expo Champion Boar, the $12,500 Summer Conference Reserve Champion Boar, the $8,000 1989 Hog College Boar and numerous outstanding sons and daughters retained in SGI customer’s herds.
