Red Bone is a very wide-made, tough and durable boar. He is wide chested, extremely bold about his shoulders and has tremendous spring and depth of rib. He is a heavy structured boar that is stout about his bone, has a big blade and good foot size. He is very aggressive, agile and moves like a cat at three years of age. Even with his more traditional Duroc phenotype, Red Bone is still lean (0.33 BF) and muscular (7.65 LEA). His sire, Shade Oak Catalyst 247-6, was imported from Canada. He was also lean and muscular with 154 days to 230, 0.37 BF and 7.65 LEA and Canadian EBVs of –0.096 BF, -2.1 Days and 142 Index. Shade Oak Catalyst 247-6 is a full brother to Hitchpin, Drawbar and Fusion that were in service at Birchwood, Stephenson Brothers and Mark Behrens. All three were outstanding breeding boars. Drawbar ranked 1st on BF and 17th on TSI in the May 1995 Across-Herd Sire Summary as well as 2nd on MLI, 13th on NBA and 8th on SPI in the November 1996 Summary. Hitchpin was ranked 3rd on MLI, 10th on NBA and 12th on SPI in the May 1996 Across-Herd Sire Summary. Red Bone has been an outstanding sire in his own right. Of the Seven herd boars presently being used in the Jones’ Herd; two are Red Bone sons, two are grandsons and one a double grandson. These five boars average 0.42 BF and excel in structural correctness and stoutness. They have consistently passed these traits onto their offspring. His daughters have also been outstanding with several weaning 10 to 12 pigs per litter. Red Bone’s maternal grandam’s sire, SGI Total 15-3, was one of the very best maternal Duroc sires ever at SGI. Red Bone offers an opportunity to maintain the traditional Duroc ruggedness and toughness in a lean, muscular package. If you are looking for highly productive females with superior longevity, we would also highly recommend Red Bone.
