SYY1 UNGER BF24

• It has long been recognized in animal breeding that you make the most progress in improving a trait by using extremes (animals that deviate the greatest from the means of their contemporary groups).  UNGER BF24 certainly represents an extreme in terms of backfat and overall leanness.  He scanned only 0.24 in (6.1 mm) of backfat at 230 lb and 0.59 in at 320 lb utilizing a Real Time scanning device.  Littermates to UNGER BF24 scanned 0.36, 0.54 and 0.54 with 6.88, 5.82 and 6.96 LEA at 230 lb. 
• Unger BF24 is a full Swedish boar being sired by SGI 275 Ume and out of an imported (in dam) Swedish sow.  UME had only 0.43 of backfat and the 11 pigs in UNGER BF24 dam’s litter averaged only 0.56 in of backfat. 
• UNGER BF24 is not only extreme in leanness but also in his genetic heritage for sow productivity.  His paternal granddam averaged 11.3 born live and 9.8 weaned in four parities and his paternal great granddam averaged 11.6 born live and 10.9 weaned in four parities and his paternal great granddam averaged 11.6 born live and 10.9 weaned in seven parities. 
• UNGER is from a litter of 11 farrowed, 11 weaned with 150 lb 21-day weight.  His dam has averaged 9.2 farrowed live and 9.4 weaned (after transfer) for five parities. 
• UNGER BF24’s maternal granddam has averaged 12.6 born live and 11.1 weaned with two 21-day litter weights of over 200 lb.  The maternal gread granddam of UNGER BF24 averaged 13.0 farrowed live and 10.4 weaned in eight parities while her dam averaged 12.9 born live and 11.1 weaned in ten parities. 
•  UNGER BF24, like all the Large Whites imported from Sweden, is negative for the porcine stress gene.  He is a very active, aggressive boar that is sound on his feet and legs.  He is a big scaled and long bodied boar that is extremely trim about the jowl, lower shoulder and belly. 
• UNGER BF24 has excellent muscle shape over the top with a dimple above the tail and a big, bulging ham.  Again, typical of the Swedish Large Whites, he has an excellent underline. 
• Although UNGER BF24 may not be the perfect boar to all, he certainly offers an opportunity to remove backfat in one big step while still maintaining outstanding sow productivity.
