SGI has tried to bring in an outstanding son of our most popular and prepotent sires. Certainly SGI Selection 1-5 has been one of the best sires of any breed to stand at SGI. He was Premier Sire several times and sired champions at several national and state shows. Probably more importantly, he consistently sired aggressive, fast growing, sound boars. His daughters are very prolific, excellent milking sows that have been assets to commercial producers’ herds.

We spotted a son of his, JD, at the 1988 Southwest Chester Conference that had the same length of neck and body, heaviness of structure, excellent levelness and looseness of structure, and super growth pattern that Selection possessed.

In addition, he was wider sprung with a bigger, bolder shoulder. He also had more muscle expression, particularly to his rump and ham, than his sire. He had only 1.20 in backfat at 420 lb when he won his class at the Southwest Conference.

JD is out of an outstanding litter of 15 farrowed and 13 weaned. Five boars sold to breeders and J.D. Ray kept all five gilts from the litter. JD’s dam has farrowed 74 pigs and weaned 65 in six litters.

His maternal granddam is a double-bred Javelina and produced the 1984 NBS Champion Boar. Barrows produced by J.D. Ray from sows bred identically to JD’s dam and granddam has won numerous barrow shows during the past years.

We strongly feel that JD combines as many good things into one package as any Chester boar to stand at SGI. Knowing what an outstanding job his sire did on a wide cross-section of purebred and crossbred females, we are confident that he will consistently pass these superior traits on to his offspring.
